2008 Events Programme For Schools
Living History Days: 19th and 20th June
The “Living History” event, which we hope will take place between Thursday 19th and
Sunday 22nd June 2008, will consist of an innovative programme of demonstrations and workshops
run by artists, farmers and craftspeople, which will bring to life for visitors to the Museum the
traditional skills and rural crafts associated with agricultural life in the farm townships of the
past through such activities as ploughing with horses, blacksmithing, spinning, weaving, organic
and storytelling.
The demonstrations and workshops that are planned for the 19th and 20th June are linked to the
history curriculum and will be aimed at school and home-educated children. The demonstrations
and workshops will provide the children with the opportunity to watch and have a go at some of
the traditional skills and rural crafts associated with the farm townships of the past such as
the Township of Auchindrain in a hands-on and fun way. Whilst the “Living History”
event planned for the 19th and 20th June is primarily aimed at school children and home-educated
children, the Museum will remain open to the general public and visitors to the Museum will be
given the opportunity to participate in the workshops and demonstrations, where practical.

CHANTICA Events
See events below.
2008 Culture, Heritage and Nature Together in Contemporary Art (CHANTICA) Programme
In July 2008 Auchindrain Museum will host the Scottish cultural action based around the farm Township
of Auchindrain as part of a twenty-four month project (CHANTICA) that will involve five partners in
five European countries; Grampus Heritage & Training Limited (England), ARCH (Scotland), Vitra, Centre
for Sustainable Development (Slovenia), STROPEK (Slovakia) and e-isotis (Greece). Each partner will
bring young people (up to forty young people per partner) to work on a cultural action in each
other’s countries in Scotland’s case at Auchindrain Museum. All of the partners will
run actions at five-month intervals based around a cultural venue, starting with Slovenia in May 2008
and Auchindrain Museum (Scotland) in July 2008.
The cultural action that will take place in Scotland is based around the farm Township of Auchindrain
and will take place from 19th-27th July 2008. The young people will work with Museum staff to
investigate what life was like for the tenant farmers who once lived and worked in the Township of
Auchindrain. The Museum will then run a number of workshops led by artists and craftspeople where
participants from the partner countries, local community groups and visitors to the Museum can learn
about and have a go at the traditional skills and rural crafts associated with the Township.
The aim of CHANTICA is to provide opportunities for young people from rural areas in the periphery of
Europe to travel to partner countries and participate in cultural activities. CHANTICA is specifically
aimed at:
1) Young people from Mid-Argyll and Kintyre (Inveraray, Lochgilphead and Campbeltown).
2) Young people from Cumbria (Keswick).
3) Young people from Slovenia (Cerknica).
4) Young people from Eastern Slovakia (Stropkov).
5) Young people from Greece (Athens).
During the course of the cultural action at Auchindrain Museum local people from the largely rural
area surrounding the Museum i.e. the towns and villages of Inveraray, Furnace, Minard, Lochgair and
Lochgilphead will be encouraged to participate in the workshops.
Participating in international projects such as CHANTICA will help to raise awareness of Auchindrain
Museum both nationally and internationally. Through the workshop element of the project the Museum
will be able to increase access to the Township of Auchindrain for a wide range of people, create new
audiences for the Museum through its participation in this creative and imaginative project and
encourage local people and tourists to pay a repeat visit or first visit to the Museum. Participating
in CHANTICA will also helping the Museum to develop a network of partners and enabling it to
participate in national and international partnership working activities.
